There's not a lot of point in anonymizing $company when it's the first and second Google hit for "is a values-based, social change platform" :-p

p.s. your blog entry is 3rd :-)

First let me state my bias by telling you that I teach in a university. Then I will surprise you by telling you that I agree with you 100%. Education isn't about getting a vocation. It is about learning to think, analyze and critically evaluate raw sources of information. When it comes to a computer science degree, we all know that by the time a student graduates, what he learned his first 3 years in the technology world is obsolete. What that degree does show an employer, especially one who is not also a computer geek, is that this person can read, follow directions, complete a project on time etc. It doesn't make him any better than his non-degree holding counterpart. It is just that those little letters after his name keep him from having to prove those basic points every time he goes for a job. And before you say it, I know there are plenty of people who managed to graduate from a college program and don't have a clue what they are doing.

Nice article! I also dont see the solution by substituting social media. I'm trying to help with the overload issue with the DoEmialRight (tm) methodology I developed. I will publish it soon. Bob

Might the words "yeah, but gimme the 'so that'" resonate? I find them...useful, if only in conversations with myself.

Agreed! This is why we have teams, after all; Each member has a unique set of experiences and perspectives and each is invaluable in a situation like this.

When all else fails, though, it helps to break things down to their most basic components to gain a new perspective. Case in point: what is an index card? Define that and it can give you insights into possible alternatives (or confirm that index cards are the correct tool for the job).

Nice!

Knowing what available options are is often my weak point. There are highly visible options, and while I know there are others, sometimes I'm boggled at knowing how to figure out what they are.

That's where sharing the need with others, widening the circle of problem-solvers can sometimes come in handy for me. But it's tricky.
